Regulatory challenges and opportunities for port decarbonisation discussed at an ENEPORTS workshop

One of the goals of the European project ENEPORTS is to position Atlantic ports as key ecosystems for the integration of renewable energy and as living laboratories to test new energy generation technologies. In parallel with the technological work being carried out by the consortium, social awareness also plays a role in achieving this goal. For this reason, a workshop was held with students from the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM+) in Caen (France).

The meeting was part of the ENEPORTS results presentation event, organised by BUILDERS in Caen and Honfleur. During the session, students were able to engage directly with representatives of the Port Authorities participating in the project, in an enriching exchange of ideas and perspectives on the energy future of European ports.

Among the students’ questions, key issues were addressed, such as the port’s decarbonisation strategy and national regulations that act as barriers, or the renewable energy technologies considered most promising in the energy transition plans to meet the specific needs of the port. These topics sparked a debate that highlighted both the regulatory challenges and technological opportunities for advancing towards more sustainable and resilient ports.

The interaction between students and professionals in the port sector underscores ENEPORTS’ commitment to education, active involvement of younger generations, and knowledge transfer—essential elements for accelerating the energy transformation of port environments.
