The Port of Granadilla de Abona (Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife) hosted a very special visit as part of the Archipiéla-GO! Awards, featuring fourth-year students from the Civil Engineering Degree at the University of La Laguna (ULL). This activity, held on 7 May, showcases the efforts of the ENEPORTS project to promote awareness of the benefits and requirements of ports as key areas for the development of renewable energy technologies.
During the visit, students were introduced to the facilities of the Blue Innovation Centre (CIAG), where several of the most notable projects driving the energy transition in the port sector were presented, including ENEPORTS. This initiative, supported by Interreg funds, reflects the commitment of the Canary Islands port system to sustainability, innovation, and the transformation of ports into green energy ecosystems.
Another key moment of the visit was the presentation of the OPS (Onshore Power Supply) facilities, designed to allow ships to connect electrically to the port, thereby significantly reducing emissions during their stay. Also showcased were the advances in the construction of the Port of Granadilla itself and the work of the Granadilla Environmental Observatory, highlighting the comprehensive and environmentally-conscious approach to port development.
This type of activity aligns with ENEPORTS’ objective of raising awareness of the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of converting ports into renewable energy platforms. In particular, it emphasises the involvement of civil society — and especially young people — to foster interest and participation in a sustainable future from the local level.
Through initiatives like this, the ENEPORTS project not only shares its results and methodologies with the new generations but also helps to build bridges between universities, public administration, and the professional sector.
