The European Commission has recognised the ENEPORTS project as a success story in transforming Atlantic ports into digitalised green energy hubs. Funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme (€2.84 million, 75 % EU co-financing), ENEPORTS is being implemented in the ports of Ferrol, Granadilla, and Leixões.
The technological centre ITG, which leads the project, expressed gratitude for this recognition and emphasised that digitalisation is essential for port decarbonisation and the efficient use of renewable energy. “Our work enables energy resources in port environments to be managed through a smart platform using technology and replicable methodologies, validating new renewable energy production systems and achieving competitive prices,” said ITG.
The project has successfully overcome legal and technical barriers by involving port authorities, technology centres, and companies in the sector to digitalise energy management and develop innovative solutions. Key achievements include:
- Methodological tools for considering legal requirements and challenges when planning renewable energy power plants within Port Areas.
- An intelligent energy management platform featuring digital twins, weather forecasting, and cybersecurity measures.
- Evaluation of OPS (Onshore Power Supply) systems using renewable hydrogen to power ships.
